Employee Free Choice Act Television Ads Released
Released July 23, 2008
A new ad aimed at defeating the misnamed Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) debuted this spring as part of a public awareness campaign that educates voters about this dangerous legislation. The EFCA (H.R. 800), would deny employees the fundamental democratic right to a secret-ballot election administered by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). It would replace the private ballot with a system called "card check" which allows a union to organize if a majority of employees simply sign a card. Under this system, the employees' signatures are made public to the employer, the union organizers and coworkers.
These ads are sponsored by the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (www.myprivateballot.com) site, of which NADCA is a member organization. They use a humorous, widely recognized character to connect with voters, workers, and television watchers. The commercials began running nationally on cable news networks in late April as part of the Coalition's efforts to defeat this legislation. NADCA members who attended the Government Affairs Conference in April lobbied in opposition to this bill. Organized labor has made support for EFCA a litmus test for candidates that it endorses in the 2008 elections. The unions are already preparing to make a big push for the bill early in 2009.
